Our History.

Johann was known to be a caring and meticulous farmer taking great care of his livestock and an immaculate homestead. He was once asked to speak on the practices he employed with his dairy cattle, as the cream he sold was always of such high quality. After speaking at a local meeting, detailing the care and love he bestowed on his cows, one of the men commented that “he’d rather be a cow in Johann’s barn than a farmer on his own land”.

Gunnar, Johann and Thora’s son, was the next generation to take over the farm. He married Margaret in 1947 and together they had seven children. Gunnar was a community man; he sat on many boards and was involved in countless community events, believing in volunteering and giving back. Gunnar and Margaret continued to expand the farm and introduced powered machinery, such as tractors and combines, reducing the manual labour required (not that there still was not lots of it). Gunnar also added beef cattle to the farm in addition to the grain, hay and dairy that was already in production.

Today Bragi, one of Gunnars 4 sons, and his wife Heather live in the house on the original homestead that Johann and Thora built in 1918. Bragi attended the U of M to study agriculture and returned to farm full-time at the age of 21. Heather, who grew up in Winnipeg, fell into farming life and continued to carry on many Icealandic traditions with their family, even though she didn’t grow up with them herself. Together, they have introduced both a leaf-cutter bee operation to the farm and sheep (the dairy operation had left before Heather arrived.) They have four children, Heida, Avery, Odinn and Johann. Our farm began direct marketing grass-fed beef in the late 80’s and we are founding members of the Manitoba Grass-Fed Beef Association. Pastured poultry, inspired by Joel Salatin, was Heida and Avery business when they were in higschool, which Heida continues to this day. Odinn is the newest to farm full-time, now the fourth generation working the land -land that his great grandfather settled.
